St Nicholas Village Referendum

9am –7pm 7th May 2005
St Nicholas Village Hall

Footpath opposite St. Nicholas Church

Have you considered the implications of this well-intentioned safety measure?

Considerable concern was expressed at the AGM of the St. Nicholas-at-Wade Parish Council on Wednesday evening 20th April when the question of the proposed footpath came under discussion, in particular the section alongside The Old Cottage and Farriers Cottage opposite the Church.

We realise that the safety of children is paramount, but there is another path which is much safer and could easily be used, going up The Oaks past Wantsum Court and down through Bridges Close to the School.

Currently it is just possible for 2 cars to pass along this section of road, but with a footpath in place and a road width of 3.4 metres it would be impossible. There will be times when there is a wedding or funeral, or the dustcart is passing though, the road would be blocked and there would be no way round for up to 40 minute's in the case of a funeral.

With 2 pinch points in the village the potential is for chaos, gridlock and many frustrated drivers, which is far more likely to lead on to accidents.

Any vehicles turning left out of Shuart Lane will have to be out in the path of traffic coming past the church to see if anything is coming.

The result of the Referendum would be influential in having the building of this section near the church confirmed, or stopped.

Question. Do you think a footpath opposite the Church will improve the overall safety? YES or NO.

Whatever the result, the publics opinion should be confirmed rather than assumed; it is your choice.

Any resident of the village who is over 18 years old can take part by showing some means of confirming their name and address.
Anyone wishing to vote who will be absent on the 7th, can request a Proxy Form at the Post Office.

There will be a box in the Village Hall for any alternative solutions to the peak periods, principally during the school-runs of morning and afternoon.

P.T.O. to see the map of the proposed scheme.
