Letter from the Highways Operation Manager to the residents of The Street Dear Sir/Madam The Street. St. Nicholas-at-Wade Work Programming For the Creation of New Footway You may well be aware that a new section of footway is to be provided along The Street between Rose Cottage and St. Nicholas Church. The scheme involves the construction of linking sections of footway in order to provide a continuous route along the south side of the road. This will also create two areas of 'single way' traffic flow at either end of the scheme providing a degree of traffic management. Works will commence on Tuesday 03 May with the initial setting up of the first section of road closure between Rose Cottage and the Manor Road junction. This will enable kerbing to be established alongside Alpha and Elder Cottage. The main run of kerbing for the new footway will follow and extend from 1 Thanet View past Rose Cottage, Sea View Cottages and Pepper Alley to the junction of Manor Road. Following the installation of the new kerbing, a second gang will progress with the adjustments to cellar openings, air vents and vertical damp proof courses. It is expected that the new areas of footways will be completed over most of the total width to base course levels in order to make them available for use as soon as possible. The final surfacing will be undertaken once all the works adjacent to the properties have been completed. This may be a few days after the end of the specific road closure period. The first section is expected to be substantially completed within about two and a half weeks, at which point the second half of the closure will be implemented between Manor Road and Shuart Lane junction. Progress through this second section will basically follow the pattern as indicated above for the initial closure. There may be other localised traffic management arrangements in addition to the closures to allow completion of the works directly affecting the abutting properties. Individual property owners should have access available at all times, but the direction of approach may vary .The installation of a dropped kerb across individual accesses will restrict use of that access for a day or so. The site foreman will contact affected residents as necessary. The work across the Bell Inn frontage will be undertaken in two parts to provide some continuous parking facility at all times, The bus service will use Manor Road initially, turning as normal at The Oaks. During the second part of the closure the bus will use Manor Road and The Length, with no access as far as The Oaks. The bus company will display notices at The Oaks indicating where the temporary stops will be positioned, The school bus for secondary age children will be subject to the same arrangements. The whole scheme should be completed within about six weeks. This time period overlaps the 'open gardens' weekend of 04/05 June, but the site will be made as safe and clear of obstruction as possible for that period. Arrangements will also take into account any weddings or funerals, with a restriction on the use of noisy equipment at those times. I fully appreciate that this scheme will cause a degree of local nuisance and individuals will have to adjust their personal travel routes. However, I have every expectation that the finished scheme will provide a very useful facility, with increased safety for pedestrians and children, and a positive degree of traffic management by the creation of the two 'single way' sections of road by Rose Cottage and St. Nicholas Church. If you have any particular concerns, please contact meat the above office. Yours faithfully Alan Ross Operations Manager |
