Subject: Objection to the recommendation of Cabinet to Council on Kent
International Airport
I am writing on behalf of a significant and growing number of members of CPRE Kent
who are expressing great concern over the prospect of night flights into Manston
Airport and the associated aircraft noise and pollution, as well as impact of
traffic, that will result.
I wish to formally register CPRE Kent’s strong opposition to the approval
of night flights, particularly in the apparent absence of any information being
made available on:
· The environmental impacts (most particularly noise) of extending
operations into the night hours;
· The number of local residents who would be affected by the increased
stress and disturbance of night-time noise.
It seems to us that Thanet District Council risks defaulting in its duty to
protect the human rights of the residents of Thanet and beyond. Putting
the commercial interests of an organisation that is apparently struggling to
meet its targets above the well-being of residents seems questionable.
We have taken preliminary legal advice on this matter, which indicates that any
expansion of operations at Manston Airport to include scheduled night flights
should not go ahead without full planning permission. Such an expansion
will have significant environmental and social impacts and, as such, a
comprehensive impact assessment and full consultation must be commissioned
before any such expansion can be
considered.<?/bigger><?/bigger><?/fontfamily>
Please confirm that such a significant change in the scale, and impact, of
Manston’s operations will not be authorised without regard to the requirements
of the law.
Yours sincerely,
Hilary Newport
Director, CPRE Kent
