Set the record straight

ON JANUARY 12, Cliffsend Parish Council held an informal meeting attended by Cllr Sandy Ezekiel, Cllr John Kirby and Brian White of TDC.

Alastair Robertson, of Kent International Airport, was also present and, as it was informal, there were no proposals made, nor any vote taken.

The main object of this meeting was to discuss the effects upon Cliffsend of proposed night flights and the new Section 106 Agreement.

The parish council made it clear that whilst they supported growth at the airport, hoping for its success, and understood that TDC had a gun to its head over night flights, they would not agree to or condone those flights.

There was concern about the early morning flights and how they affected the residents of Cliffsend. It was also made clear that the parish council would rather wait until night flights had been experienced before making any statement in relation to them.

One person who attended the meeting went away with an incorrect view of what had been said and further moulded it to suit their own needs when making a speech to Thanet District Council on January 13, the transcript of which is a matter of public record.

As a result of this 'misinterpretation' Cliffsend Parish Council has been falsely accused of having "unanimously supported the council's decision" and "unequivocally giving their support".

Hopefully, this will set the record straight and bring an end to derision and speculation.

Cllr Bob Roberts, chairman, Cliffsend Parish Council.
